Driveways

You’ve worked hard to make your home a place of comfort and contentment. A Paver driveway from Peninsula Landscaping is the exclamation point to the pride you feel every time you come home.

Choosing the product that’s right for you

Choosing the best contractor and paver material for your driveway is an important decision. Driveways are subject to a lot of use and abuse by vehicles, people, equipment and chemicals such as de-icing salt.  Installation of Driveway applications is very different from regular pavers such as those used for patios or walkways.  The pavers are usually 50% thicker and the prep work is much more labor intensive to support the weight of the car.  Our pavers are designed to outperform other paving surfaces such as asphalt, poured concrete and stamped concrete. Consider pavers for premium styles and textures that can repel dirt, oil and chewing gum and also prevent cracking which is impossible to fix without redoing an entire driveway.

Compliment the design of your home

A Driveway built with Pavers or Stone will enhance the curb appeal of your home and demonstrate your pride of ownership.  Paver driveways are very much associated with luxury.  As you consider the materials that you will use, try to replicate, augment or complement the architectural features of your home. A graceful flare at the street edge will allow cars to enter and exit with ease.

Accessorize and customize

Personalize your driveway by adding a border, accent or custom design! Peninsula Landscaping offers many pavers with multiple textures and colors that are ideal for creating these types of applications. We even offer luminescent pavers which are visually appealing and practical for parking at night, although we recommend exploring other lighting options beforehand so you can make an informed decision for your property and outdoor landscape lighting needs.

Permeable Pavers

If a large portion of your lot is a hard surface or if it’s subject to periodic flooding, permeable pavers are now an option to help divert water back into the ground. This is often times also a requirement from the DEQ or other government bodies that police runoff.  Can't install any more hard surface, give us a call and we can show you how we can.  Most permeable pavers look just like our regular pavers so you don’t have to compromise style! Keep in mind that specialized site preparation and installation techniques are required.

Featured Project, Yorktown VA

While most of our lighting customers are homeowners, the below featured project is for a homeowners association in Yorktown.   The customer wanted to create impact and ensure the HOA entrance stays updated.   Our team is capable of boring under roads and installing wire, something that was done on several runs.  The customer was able to light the entire entrance including an 800 foot median for just $9,000 thanks to our MEET or BEAT program.  Check out pictures below:

-Borders and Aprons: How to create a visually interesting driveway using concrete pavers -

Picture this: You’ve just purchased a beautiful new five-bedroom Craftsman home in a wonderful neighborhood. The landscaping is superb and you love the interior details of your house. But something just isn’t quite right. When you drive up to your new home, your driveway doesn’t match the overall aesthetic. You begin to wonder how you can improve the overall look of your driveway without spending too much money or destroying the surface that’s already there. Alternatively: You’re close to retirement and looking to sell your house. How do you make your home the home to buy? The answer lies in using concrete pavers to create decorative aprons and bordering for your driveway. Pavers can be used to effectively create a whole new front yard aesthetic. Whether preparing your home for sale or for your own enjoyment, concrete pavers offer an amazing solution to a vexing problem: how do you make your driveway as dynamic and exciting as the rest of your house?

Borders for definition

Borders provide visually interesting contrast and highlight your home’s entrance when used to frame a driveway. Borders constructed with durable concrete pavers can preserve the edges of an asphalt surface and aid in containing gravel. For this reason alone, using a border to frame your gravel driveway is a sound choice. On a design level, stunning effects can be achieved by utilizing dark borders in combination with light gravel. For example, when the old world cobblestone texture of paver interacts with pale and coarse gravel, a beautiful cool and earthy aesthetic is achieved. From a design standpoint, the varied textures and tones of the gravel and pavers create a wholly unique and dynamic image. The use of pavers as a border creates a clear distinction between the road and your home while simultaneously heightening the overall look of your landscaping. Lastly, using pavers as a border, rather than as the driveway itself, saves you money while creating a unique and fresh design.

Aprons as an aesthetic opening

Driveway aprons are perfect for boosting curb appeal and creating a memorable driveway opening. Aprons also make the construction of a flared driveway entrance a possible addition to your gravel or asphalt driveway. This is achieved by replacing the front section of a driveway with concrete pavers, creating a durable link between the street and the home. Normally this section extends between 5 and 15 ft. away from the street, but can extend further to accommodate longer driveways.  Choose from various styles like modern, colonial, contemporary, English classic, or craftsman.

Great materials for matching your home’s aesthetic

Concrete pavers provide a wide spectrum of style and color option to accommodate the architecture of almost any home. By adding an apron or border with concrete pavers, you can add character to existing asphalt or gravel driveways with product choices that play off the materials used in the façade of the home.  Call Peninsula Landscaping Inc. today to see what we can do for your home.  CALL 757-759-5747 or email info@peninsulalawn.com

Top 5 Driveway Design Considerations

1. Complement Your Home

A Peninsula paver driveway enhances the curb appeal and value of your home and reflects your pride of ownership.

2. Size Matters

The minimum width for a single car driveway is 12 feet. For a double car garage, plan a minimum of 20 feet. The minimum length of driveway in order to park a car is 22 feet. Add 22 feet for each additional car you wish to park. If your driveway abuts a wall, slope or garden, add 4 feet to the width so that passengers in the car can comfortably open their doors and exit.

3. Walkways

Consider how guests will get from your driveway to your front door. When adding a walkway that joins your driveway at the front of the house, the optimal “mouth” is 16 feet so that the car door isn’t too far from the walkway, 12 feet is the minimum.

4. Four Season Considerations

Think about where you will pile snow in winter and be sure to choose a paver that can withstand de-icing salts. Consider permeable pavers to reduce rainwater runoff and decrease ice accumulation in winter.  This applicable to our customers in Newport News, Wiliamsburg, Richmond, James City County, Toano, Virginia areas only.

5. Make it Your Own

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your driveway to make it your own. With pavers, there are an unlimited number of design possibilities.

Consider using Pavers instead of stamped concrete that is prone to cracking or asphalt which disintegrates and breaks away at the edges.

Two types of concrete:

1.  Gotta-crack

2. Gonna-crack
